Patient dies after falling from balcony at Dhaka Medical College Hospital

A 20-year-old patient died after jumping from the balcony of the eighth floor at Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital’s new building early Friday morning.
According to Inspector Md. Faruk of the hospital’s police camp, the deceased, identified as Riya Begum, was receiving treatment in Ward 802 of the medicine department. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. when Riya reportedly climbed over the balcony railing and fell onto a vehicle parked below.
Hospital staff rushed her to the emergency department, but attending physicians declared her dead upon examination. Riya, a native of Bhadur-dangi village in Pabna Sadar, had been hospitalized for physical ailments, including oral ulcers.
Her father, Latif Mallick, a farmer, stated that other patients’ relatives alerted him when they noticed his daughter walking toward the balcony, but he was unable to reach her in time to intervene. He noted that Riya, who had married a Singapore-based expatriate named Al Amin over the phone several years ago, had been exhibiting signs of significant mental distress.
According to her family, Riya had been behaving abnormally for the past 10 days, frequently laughing without cause or speaking incoherently. The hospital has transferred her body to the morgue, and the Shahbagh Police Station has been notified to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of her death.
