Former Minister Abdul Latif Siddique arrested over Shapla Chattar violence

Former government minister Abdul Latif Siddique was arrested at his Gulshan residence by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch on Thursday. The arrest follows an outstanding warrant issued by the International Crimes Tribunal in connection with allegations of crimes against humanity linked to the 2013 crackdown on a Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar.

The operation to apprehend the former minister was carried out by specialized units from the Detective Branch. Following his arrest, Siddique was taken into custody for questioning, though he has consistently denied any involvement in the violent dispersal of the protest, which remains a highly contentious event in the nation’s recent political history.

Siddique, who was previously expelled from the Awami League, is no stranger to legal proceedings and prior detentions.
