Jashore MP residence vandalized following dispute over local madrasa access

A violent confrontation at the residence of Member of Parliament Golam Rasul in Jashore on Tuesday has sparked political tensions, with local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders accusing opposition activists of inciting the attack. The unrest stemmed from a long-standing dispute regarding access to a local madrasa situated in the city’s Nilganj area.
The conflict escalated around 11:00 a.m. when MP Rasul, who also serves as the Jashore district emir of Jamaat-e-Islami, and his daughter entered the Al Madrasatush Shar’iyah, located across from their home. An altercation ensued between the MP’s family, madrasa officials, and guardians, quickly drawing a crowd of angry local residents. As the situation grew volatile, the MP and his daughter retreated into their home and locked the gates, while demonstrators reportedly vandalized the property, shattering windows and damaging security cameras.

By evening, the MP’s residence remained under police guard, with family members confined inside. Jashore Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam arrived at the scene to mediate, securing an agreement to hold a formal meeting on Wednesday at the district administrator’s office to resolve the underlying grievances.
In a statement, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar condemned the incident, characterizing it as a pre-planned attack orchestrated by local elements associated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He demanded immediate accountability for those involved in the vandalism and criticized what he termed a smear campaign against his party. Following the attack, Jamaat activists organized a protest march through Jashore city, culminating at the Doratana intersection.

The BNP has vehemently denied any involvement in the unrest. Jashore District BNP General Secretary Delwar Hossain Khokan stated that the incident was a localized dispute between the madrasa administration and the MP’s family, asserting that his party members were instructed to ensure public order during the disturbances rather than participate in them.
The dispute centers on a narrow eight-to-ten-foot access path in a residential neighborhood where the madrasa was established in 2023. Local residents and family members of the MP have frequently complained about congestion caused by students and guardians. Madrasa officials, however, allege that the MP’s family has repeatedly harassed students, creating a climate of hostility.
As investigations continue, the local police have tightened security around the residence, and city officials are moving to address the spatial and administrative concerns that precipitated the violence.
