Police investigate suspected murder after womans body found in pond in Rangpur

Police in Rangpur’s Pirganj upazila recovered the decomposed body of a 35-year-old woman from a pond on Monday, launching an investigation into what officials suspect was a premeditated murder. The victim, identified as Nargis Begum, a local resident of Morarpara village who earned a living by begging, was discovered inside a sack submerged in a pond in the Kumedpur union.
The discovery was made around 2:00 p.m. when local farmers working in a field adjacent to the Kumedpur Union Land Office detected a foul odor. Upon investigation, they spotted a human leg protruding from the water lilies in a pond owned by a local resident named Asgar Ali. Authorities were alerted immediately, and by 4:00 p.m., police had retrieved the body. The victim’s brother, Jahangir Alam, later arrived at the scene and formally identified his sister.

According to preliminary reports, investigators believe the victim was killed elsewhere several days ago and that the body was subsequently placed in the sack and dumped in the isolated pond to conceal her identity and obscure the crime. Rakibul Hasan, the victim’s nephew, echoed these suspicions, stating that his aunt had no known enemies in the area and that the manner of death clearly indicated a calculated act of violence.
Pirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Haque confirmed that the body has been sent to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. He noted that while the investigation is in its early stages, the circumstances strongly point toward a planned homicide. Police are currently in the process of filing a formal case as they work to uncover the details surrounding the incident.
