Measles outbreak claims 820 lives in Bangladesh since March

Four more children have died from measles-related symptoms over the past 24 hours, raising the national death toll to 820 since the outbreak began on March 15. According to the latest report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday, the latest fatalities were reported in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Netrokona, and Barishal.

The DGHS data indicates that the viral surge continues to escalate, with 1,160 new cases recorded between Saturday and Sunday morning. Of these, 170 children were officially diagnosed with measles, while the remaining 990 exhibited clinical symptoms consistent with the disease.

Since mid-March, the country has seen a total of 139,195 reported infections. Among these cases, 15,442 children have been laboratory-confirmed with measles, while 123,753 others presented with symptoms. Official figures show that 95 of the total deaths occurred following a confirmed diagnosis, while the remaining 725 fatalities were attributed to measles-like symptoms.

The burden on the healthcare system remains significant. Since the onset of the outbreak, 106,239 children have required hospitalization. Of those admitted, 102,467 patients have been treated and discharged, reflecting the ongoing efforts by health authorities to manage the influx of patients across regional facilities.
