Teacher beaten to death in Pallavi

A school teacher named Feroza Khanam alias Jochna (68) was beaten to death with a hammer in Pallavi of the capital. The police recovered his bloodied body from the rented house of Pallavi on Friday afternoon.

Feroza was a teacher in a local school named Holy Crescent Ideal School. Police said that a blood-stained hammer was recovered from the side of the body.

According to the police and family sources, Feroza lived alone in a room on the second floor of the six-storey building number 29, road number 8, ‘D’ block, section number 12, Mirpur. He got married about 25 years ago. However, after a few days of marriage, she separated from her husband.

Since then Feroza lived alone. He lived in one of those three-room flats. A man named Raju Munshi lives in the next room with his wife and children. The other room is vacant, a ‘to-let’ has been drawn on the gate of the building to rent it out.

Abdul Mannan, security guard of the building, told reporters that Feroza used to teach in kindergarten as well as tutoring in different homes. He used to leave home every morning. Sometimes he returned at noon, but most of the time he returned home around 10 pm. Yesterday, Thursday morning, he left home and returned at 10 pm. However, as he did not come out of the house at 10:30 am on Friday, the security personnel went to the second floor to look for him.

Seeing the door of the flat open, the security guard came down and told the local resident Mohiuddin. Later they went to the house and found Feroza lying on the bed in a bloody state. On receiving the information, the police of Pallabi police station went to the spot. Based on the information provided by them, the Crime Scene Unit of the Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) collected evidence from the spot.

Later in the afternoon, the body was sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for post-mortem. The deceased teacher’s village home is in Krishnapur of Munsipara police station of Kurigram.

Police officials said that a blood-stained veil along with a hammer was recovered from the spot. Feroza had bruises on the left side and center of her head. Apart from this, there are marks of injury on his snout.

On hearing the news, Roman Hossain, the brother of the deceased Feroza, rushed to the spot. He said, “Even though my sister got married 25 years ago, that family broke up. After that he never married again. My sister has been killed.’

After inspecting the scene, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Md. Mostak Sarkar told Prothom Alo that Feroza had no contact with the family. It is believed that he was killed by hitting his head with a hammer. A motive for the killing was not immediately known. Police are working to identify the killer.
