Bangladesh government reshuffles UGC members and appoints new Accreditation Council chairman

The Bangladesh government has overhauled the leadership at the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, issuing a series of directives to appoint new officials while relieving several incumbents of their duties.

The Ministry of Education’s Secondary and Higher Education Division announced the appointment of three new members to the UGC on Sunday. The incoming officials include Professor Md. Mehedi Khan of the Department of Population Science and Professor Md. Aslam Hossain of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Dhaka, alongside Professor Niaz Ahmed Chowdhury of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

According to the official notifications, the appointments are for a four-year term. However, the government retains the authority to rescind these mandates prior to the completion of the term if deemed necessary. These appointments follow the removal of Professors Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Md. Saidur Rahman, and Mohammad Ayub Islam, who had been serving in these roles since the assumption of the interim government.

In a concurrent administrative shift, the government has also moved to replace the leadership of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council. Professor Mesbahuddin Ahmed has been relieved of his duties as chairman of the council. He is succeeded by Professor Md. Akhtar Hossain Khan, a former faculty member at the University of Dhaka who most recently served as the vice-chancellor of the State University of Bangladesh.
