A two-day conference on Culture and Creative Arts was held at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). ‘The Nation and its Imaginations: Culture and Creative Industries in Bangladesh’ organized by the Department of Media and Communication of IUB ended last Friday.

Teachers, researchers, students and professionals from home and abroad participated in the conference. Over the course of two days, discussions focused on how media, culture and creative industries are influencing contemporary national identity, thought and economy.

IUB Vice-Chancellor M Tamim, Vice-Chancellor Daniel W. Lund and Dean Bakhtiar Ahmed of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences were present at the inaugural session on April 9. The first day’s keynote speech was presented by Craig Batty, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities, University of Adelaide, Australia. He highlighted the importance of new ideas in creative practice and research. Professor Lund presented the keynote speech at the beginning of the second day. He discusses mass media, audience sentiment and cognitive dissonance.

A total of 36 research papers were presented in four parallel sessions over two days. These essays cover topics such as digital economy, platform labour, media globalization, culture production, gender and representation, youth identity in social media, folk culture, film and visual media, urban subcultures and political symbols, etc. The conference featured three panel discussions, which discussed the impact of technology, the changing reality of the creative sector and the future and challenges of the country’s film industry.

The event will help to advance contemporary discussions on media, culture and creative arts and to enhance connections between research and the professional world.
