Gazipur Garment Factory Under Investigation After 147 Workers Fall Ill

Authorities in Gazipur have launched an official investigation into the illness of 147 garment workers at Color & Co. Ltd. in Sreepur, who fell sick over a span of two consecutive days. Gazipur Civil Surgeon Mamunur Rahman confirmed on Thursday that a six-member committee, headed by Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nahid Bhuiyan, has been tasked with identifying the cause of the health crisis. The committee is required to conduct an on-site inspection and submit its formal findings within seven working days.
The incident began Tuesday morning at the factory located in the Tepirbari area, when 77 workers suddenly reported symptoms of illness. While many sought care at Al Hera Hospital in Maona Chowrasta, several workers requiring advanced medical intervention were transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. All affected individuals were subsequently discharged after receiving treatment. However, the situation escalated on Wednesday morning when an additional 77 employees fell ill upon returning to the factory, bringing the total number of victims to 147.

Sreepur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Shafiqul Islam suggested that the cluster of illnesses might be a case of mass hysteria. He noted that the quick recovery of the workers following basic medical care points toward a psychological or environmental factor rather than a traditional chemical or physical contagion. Health officials have recommended counseling for the workforce and are exploring whether rearranging the factory’s internal workspace could mitigate further incidents while the investigation proceeds.
