Cargo ship carrying rice and paddy capsizes in Meghna River, causing estimated $90,000 in losses

A cargo vessel carrying thousands of bags of rice and paddy capsized early Wednesday morning at the confluence of three rivers near Chandpur, as severe turbulence in the Meghna River left local traders facing significant financial losses.
The vessel, identified as “Parbo,” was navigating the waters near the Puran Bazar terminal around 7:30 a.m. when it encountered a powerful whirlpool. According to the ship’s captain, Ershad Majhi, the cargo had departed from Pabna on Tuesday, transporting 3,800 bags of rice and 1,400 bags of paddy. Upon reaching the confluence, the vessel lost control in the strong currents and overturned.

All five crew members aboard the ship managed to escape the sinking vessel by swimming to safety. Following the incident, the capsized craft was secured and moved to the banks of the Dakatia River.
Nazmul Hossain Patwari, a director at the Chandpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and general secretary of the local Rice Traders Association, estimated that the cargo belonged to seven different businesses in Puran Bazar. Initial assessments suggest the accident resulted in approximately 10 million taka in losses.

While local maritime police officials stated they had yet to receive an official report, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has launched an investigation. Deputy Director of the Chandpur river port, Md. Kamruzzaman, confirmed that a team from the maritime safety department has been dispatched to the site to determine the precise cause of the accident and assess the overall situation.
