Teenage garment worker dies following burn incident in Dhaka as police investigate domestic abuse claims

Nineteen-year-old Shifa Akter succumbed to her injuries at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon, following a suspicious fire incident in the capital’s Mirpur area. The young woman, who had been receiving treatment for burns covering 65 percent of her body, died while under medical care.
According to her family, the incident occurred on the night of June 24. Shifa’s father, Jahangir Alam, alleges that his daughter’s husband, Sohel, doused her in kerosene and set her ablaze in the Borobagh neighborhood of Mirpur-2. Alam claims the act was motivated by a dowry dispute; he stated that while five gold bars and a portion of a promised cash payment were provided at the time of their marriage eight months ago, Sohel turned violent when the remainder of the demanded gold and money could not be delivered.

Both the victim and her husband were garment factory workers who resided in a rented home near their workplace. Following the incident, local residents rescued Shifa and transported her to the hospital.
Police have offered a conflicting account based on preliminary investigations. Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman stated that investigators recovered an audio recording of the victim made while she was hospitalized. In the recording, Shifa reportedly claims that she set herself on fire due to ongoing domestic abuse by her husband.

Inspector Md. Faruk of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost confirmed that the body has been transferred to the morgue for an autopsy. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the death, noting that the husband, Sohel, has remained in hiding since the incident.
