Court grants three-day remand for Ashika Sultana in Mirpur protest case

A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for Ashika Sultana, who was arrested late Thursday night in the capital’s Mirpur-11 area on allegations of involvement in a June 19 anti-government protest.
The decision followed a hearing at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, where the case’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Al Mamun Hossain of the Mirpur Model Police Station, originally sought a seven-day period of police custody. State prosecutor Azizul Haque Didar confirmed the court’s order after hearing arguments from both sides. While the prosecution maintained that custody was necessary for a thorough investigation, defense lawyer Jahangir Alam formally opposed the remand application.
According to the case files, the incident occurred on June 19 when a group of individuals identified as supporters of the Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League, staged a rally in the Mirpur-1 area. The demonstrators dispersed and abandoned their banners upon hearing that police were approaching the scene. Authorities subsequently reviewed video footage of the protest, which they determined was organized to mark the founding anniversary of the Awami League.
In the remand petition, investigators identified Sultana as a financier associated with the party. Police stated that her interrogation is critical to identifying the planners and leaders behind the rally and to uncovering the broader context of the demonstration.
