Jagannath University hosts seminar honoring literary contributions of Sufia Kamal and Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal

Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Rais Uddin paid tribute to the pioneering contributions of Begum Sufia Kamal on Sunday, highlighting her lifelong dedication to women’s education, the establishment of women’s rights, and the cultivation of a humane society. Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day seminar titled “Sufia Kamal: Life and Work,” held at the university’s central auditorium, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that her legacy as a champion of gender equality and progressive thought remains vital for contemporary social development.
The seminar, organized jointly by the university’s Department of Bangla and the Bangla Academy, serves to honor the enduring impact of both Sufia Kamal and the renowned poet and lyricist Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal. During the inaugural session, faculty members presented academic papers exploring the depth of Kamal’s literary output. Associate Professor Jannat Ara Soheli delivered a presentation on the diversity of themes and emotions in Kamal’s poetry, while Assistant Professor Sanjida Masud analyzed the poet’s work through an ecofeminist lens, focusing on the intersection of nature and the female experience.
These presentations were followed by a panel discussion featuring prominent researchers and academics, including Professor Gias Shamim, Dhaka University’s Professor Hosne Ara, and Jagannath University’s Associate Professor Md. Asadullahil Galib. The discourse underscored the ongoing necessity of addressing systemic gender disparities. Vice-Chancellor Rais Uddin remarked that despite significant progress, women continue to face marginalization regarding property rights and social status, asserting that increased awareness across family units, educational institutions, and state structures is essential for achieving true equality.
Beyond her role as a feminist activist, the Vice-Chancellor characterized Sufia Kamal as an icon of humanism, secularism, and progressive ideology. He urged the academic community and the public to draw inspiration from her life and literature to foster a more just and empathetic society.
The inaugural event was chaired by Professor A.K.M. Mahabul Haque, Chairman of the Department of Bangla, with opening remarks provided by Bangla Academy researcher Mahbuba Rahman. The seminar drew a wide audience of students, researchers, and faculty members. Organizers confirmed that the proceedings will continue on Monday, with the second day dedicated to exploring the life, literary contributions, and intellectual legacy of poet and lyricist Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal.
