BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul labels Jamaat-e-Islami anti-democratic party

Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has labeled Jamaat-e-Islami a “regimented political party” that lacks a fundamental belief in democratic values. Speaking to reporters on Saturday after paying respects at a cemetery in Munshiganj for individuals killed during the July uprising, the minister underscored his party’s long-standing commitment to pluralistic governance.
Dismissing accusations of authoritarianism, Minister Alamgir asserted that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) remains the sole organization to have consistently campaigned for democracy over the past five decades. He credited party founder Ziaur Rahman with establishing multiparty democracy and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia with institutionalizing parliamentary governance. The minister further defended the party’s legitimacy by citing the role of acting chairman Tarique Rahman in sustaining the democratic struggle while in exile, noting that the party’s electoral support reflects the public’s clear mandate.

The minister’s remarks follow criticism leveled by Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman, who alleged during a party event in Narayanganj on Friday that the current administration is attempting to consolidate power in a manner similar to the ousted Awami League government. The Jamaat leader warned that the public would not tolerate a return to one-party rule.
Minister Alamgir visited Munshiganj on Saturday to inspect the site for a proposed 122-meter bridge over the Kalidas Sagar River. He was accompanied by local lawmakers Md. Kamaruzzaman and Abdus Salam Azad, along with District Administrator Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafee, Superintendent of Police Md. Menhazul Alam, and District Council Administrator A.K.M. Iradat Manu. Following the inspection, the minister visited the North Islampur social cemetery to offer prayers for Sajal Molla, Riazul Farazi, and Nur Mohammad Dipjol.
