Husband kills wife in Jessore domestic dispute before attempting suicide

A domestic dispute in the Sheikhhati Tamaltala area of Jashore turned fatal on Monday morning when a 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed his wife to death before turning the weapon on himself. The victim, 19-year-old Shamina Akter, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Jashore General Hospital emergency department.
The assailant, Sohanur Rahman Sujan, a native of Tangail, remains under police guard at the same hospital, where he is receiving treatment for self-inflicted wounds. According to local law enforcement, the couple, who were cousins, had been living in a rented residence in Jashore.

Investigators and family members suggest the tragedy followed a pattern of escalating marital strife. According to family accounts provided to local authorities, Sujan had struggled with drug addiction since returning from a brief stint working abroad. Relatives claim that frequent disputes over finances and substance abuse had plagued the marriage.
Tanim Islam, the officer in charge of the Talbaria police outpost, confirmed that the couple had been experiencing persistent domestic volatility. Sujan, who was reportedly preparing for another trip abroad, engaged in a heated altercation with his wife on Monday morning that quickly escalated into physical violence. In the ensuing struggle, Sujan used a knife to inflict multiple fatal wounds on Shamina.

Following the attack, Sujan used the same weapon to wound himself repeatedly. Emergency responders transported both individuals to the hospital, where medical staff confirmed that Shamina had succumbed to her injuries before reaching the facility.
Kazi Babul, the inspector of investigation at the Jashore Kotwali Police Station, stated that authorities are currently investigating the specific circumstances surrounding the incident. Preparations for a formal criminal case are underway as police continue to monitor Sujan’s condition.
