Taapsee Pannu Criticizes Industry Double Standards on Age and Physical Appearance

Taapsee Pannu, known as one of Bollywood’s most outspoken voices, has leveled sharp criticism against the systemic ageism and gender-based double standards prevalent in the Indian film industry. In a recent interview with Times Entertainment, the actress addressed the pervasive hurdles women face, noting that the professional milestones often achieved in their thirties are paradoxically used to discredit their commercial viability.
The actress described the grueling trajectory many women endure, explaining that by the time an actress secures a foothold in the industry through merit and sheer persistence, she is often dismissed as being too old for romantic comedies. Pannu argued that while age is treated as a professional expiry date for women, their male counterparts face no such scrutiny. She highlighted that filmmakers frequently prioritize casting younger, less experienced actresses, regardless of whether the role demands that age demographic, cementing a culture of inequality that she views as a stark industry reality.
Pannu’s experience extends beyond Bollywood to the southern Indian film industries, where she encountered a unique form of professional exclusion. She recounted instances where younger actors refused to work with her simply because she had previously performed opposite senior, established stars, fueled by a misconception that she was no longer a suitable match for younger male leads. Contrasting this with the career-defining prestige associated with working alongside actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Pannu noted that while Bollywood has largely moved past such stigmas, they remain a significant obstacle elsewhere.
Beyond ageism, the actress has also turned her focus toward the toxic standards of body image frequently imposed on women. Reflecting on her own past struggles with fitness, she shared on social media how an obsession with achieving a perfectly flat stomach led her to overtrain, inadvertently causing her body to retain water and triggering further health complications. She urged her followers to reject the pressure of unrealistic aesthetic standards, emphasizing that excessive physical strain often yields counterproductive results.
Pannu is currently preparing for the release of her upcoming project, the Netflix original film “Gandhari.” Directed by Debashish Makhija and written by Kanika Dhillon, the film marks her return to the screen following her performance in Anubhav Sinha’s “Thappad.”
