Mother Rescued After Jumping into River with Four-Month-Old Infant; Search Underway for Missing Child

A search operation is underway in Kushtia after a 22-year-old woman allegedly threw her four-month-old infant into the Gorai River before jumping in herself on Friday afternoon. Local fishermen managed to rescue the woman, identified as Jamuna, near the Kushtia-Haripur connecting bridge, but the infant, Hadi, remains missing.
According to the Kushtia Fire Service and Civil Defense, the incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. While local divers have been working to locate the child since the incident, senior station officer Ardesh Ali confirmed that a specialized rescue team has been dispatched from Khulna to bolster the recovery efforts.
Family members indicated that Jamuna had been married to Abdul Alim, a resident of Hatsh Haripur, for two years, during which time the couple reportedly experienced persistent domestic disputes. Two days prior to the incident, Jamuna had traveled with her son to her father’s home in Sultanpur Beltala village. Alim stated that the child had been ill and was scheduled for medical treatment outside of Kushtia. He claimed he had requested his wife return home the previous day, but she had refused before the tragic event unfolded.
The Kushtia Model Police Station has taken Jamuna into custody for her own protection and to facilitate questioning. Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain Matubbar reported that the woman has remained inconsolable and non-communicative since her rescue. Authorities continue to hold her as the search for the missing infant persists.
