Teenager killed in clashes while heading out to join protest

A festive Eid dinner turned into a scene of inconsolable grief in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazila on Thursday, when a 15-year-old boy was killed while caught in the crossfire of a violent local dispute. Mohammad Ibrahim, who lived with his mother in the Hariakhali area of Sabrang union, died while being transported to a hospital after being severely beaten during a confrontation between two feuding groups.

The tragedy unfolded on the evening of Eid-ul-Adha, shortly after Ibrahim and his mother, Nur Nahar Begum, had returned home from working at a neighbor’s house, where they had earned three kilograms of beef. According to his mother, Ibrahim had been eager for the meal, repeatedly urging her to finish cooking so they could eat. He had barely sampled a piece of the meat when the sounds of an escalating clash outside prompted him to rush toward the street to witness the chaos.

Local reports indicate that the violence stemmed from a heated argument between several youths earlier that afternoon near the No. 3 bridge on the Shahporir Dwip-Hariakhali road. By 8 p.m., the verbal confrontation had devolved into a full-scale riot involving stone-throwing and chasing. Ibrahim was caught in the middle of the melee and was reportedly subjected to a brutal beating by a group of youths.

Bystanders rushed the critically injured teenager to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, medical staff referred him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries while in transit.

Teknaf Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sukanta Chowdhury confirmed that authorities have arrested one suspect, 24-year-old Rabiul Alam, in connection with the homicide. Police are continuing their efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining participants in the brawl. The victim’s body has been transferred to the district hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

For Nur Nahar Begum, the loss of her son has shattered her life. Recounting the final moments before he left the house, she described a son who was simply looking forward to a celebratory meal. She has since called for a full investigation and justice for her son’s death, as the community reels from an act of violence that turned a holiday of joy into a time of mourning.
