Son is fighting death in ICU, outside the father pleads ‘God, save the boy’

A hole in the heart of 9-month-old baby Hasan Ahmed was detected two months after birth. Since then, the farmer father Abdul Hai was treating his son with a loan. Meanwhile, the child’s body has developed symptoms of measles. After being admitted to the hospital on May 11, the child has been fighting for life in the intensive care unit for three days.
The child is undergoing treatment at Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmad Hospital. Abdul Hai was sitting on the front bench of the hospital’s Children’s Intensive Care Unit (PICU). After a while he suddenly got up and went to the glass window and tried to look inside. It could not be seen properly from a distance. Then he entered slowly and went to the side of his son’s bed and gently patted his hand.

Standing on the balcony of the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, Abdul Hai said in a tired voice, “When the hole in the heart was diagnosed at the age of two months, I have been receiving treatment by borrowing or with the help of relatives.” Measles is catching again. I don’t understand what to do.’ He said in a vague voice, ‘God, save my boy.’
Abdul Hai’s house is in Biswanath Upazila of Sylhet. His family lives by farming. Hasan is the youngest among four children. Hasan was admitted to Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmad Hospital with symptoms of measles since May 11. He was admitted to PICU three days ago when his condition worsened.

Abdul Hai told Prothom Alo that he is now almost destitute while handling the cost of the boy’s treatment. There are three more children in the family. Farming makes a living. Had to undergo a surgery a few days ago. Now the boy is in the ICU again. The money is gone. He left three other children at home with his sister. He came to a shop in the area for them.
Hasan’s mother Kahinur Begum was by her son’s side inside the PICU. Standing outside, the father just waits—when the doctors give some good news. Abdul Hai said that Hasan developed a fever a few days ago. If different symptoms appear in the body, it is taken to the local doctor. Later the doctor suggested admission to the hospital. Since then they are spending days and nights in the hospital.
In Sylhet, three more children died of measles in 24 hours from 8 am on Monday to 8 am on Tuesday. With this, 40 children died of measles and measles symptoms in Sylhet division. Sylhet Divisional Health Directorate has given this information in a report today.
The deceased children are Ishita Kaher, a six-month-old daughter of Palash Kaher of Srimangal, Moulvibazar, Sushmita, a 9-month-old daughter of Sujit Namsudra of Samrabazar area of the same district, and Labiba, a 9-month-old daughter of Tauhid Ali of Pirmahalla area of Sylhet Nagar. Among them, Ishita died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and the other two at Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmad Hospital.
According to the health department, since January 1 this year, 40 people have died of suspected measles in Sylhet division. Four of them have been diagnosed with measles. The rest died of symptoms. No new measles was detected in the last 24 hours, but 73 people were admitted to different hospitals with symptoms. A total of 149 people have been diagnosed with measles so far this year. Among them 16 people in Habiganj, 16 people in Moulvibazar, 75 people in Sunamganj and 42 people in Sylhet.
A total of 281 patients with measles symptoms are under treatment in different hospitals of Sylhet division till 8 am on Tuesday. Among them, maximum 77 people are under treatment in Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and 70 people are under treatment in Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmad Hospital. Apart from this, 48 people are under treatment in Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital.
