Rangpur Begum Rokeya University (Berobi) former Vice-Chancellor Md. Hasibur Rashid has been arrested by Mohammadpur police station. He is the accused in the case of the murder of Abu Saeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University of Rangpur, who was the first martyr of the July uprising. He was absconding for a long time.

He was arrested from a house on Salimullah Road in Mohammadpur around eight o’clock this Saturday night. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Mohammadpur Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Jewel Rana confirmed the arrest.

Jewel Rana told Prothom Alo, “Professor Hasibur Rashid Abu Saeed has been sentenced to 10 years in the murder case.” He has been on the run since the July coup. On Saturday night, the leaders and activists of the local Chhatra Dal saw him and detained him. Later, the police brought him to the police station.

Professor Hasibur Rashid was a teacher in the Department of Management Information Systems of Dhaka University. In June 2021, he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University. He was the vice-chancellor of the university during the July uprising. He is one of the accused in the Abu Saeed murder case. Judgment in this case was given on April 9 this year. International Criminal Tribunal-II sentenced 25 of the 30 accused in this case to different terms. Among them, Professor Hasibur Rashid was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment. Earlier, an arrest warrant was issued against him on June 30 last year.
