Drugs like yaba, kush and ketamine are being made in ‘mini labs’ in Dhaka, foreigners are also involved in the cycle

Liquid ketamine is used as an anesthetic for patients before surgery. This drug is prohibited for sale without a doctor’s prescription. This liquid ketamine is converted into a powder in a special process and is now used as a drug. And that work is being done in Dhaka.
A drug manufacturing ring that set up ‘mini labs’ was recently caught in a raid by the Narcotics Control Directorate. On March 25, three Chinese nationals were also arrested in a raid at a house in Uttara. Two drug dealers were arrested for supplying liquid ketamine to them.
Narcotics Control Directorate officials said that this gang used to manufacture drugs and send them to Malaysia, Dubai and Sri Lanka through courier services. They used to take ‘orders’ on the dark web. Transactions were carried out in crypto currencies.
Not only ketamine, the Directorate of Narcotics Control (DNC) has recently discovered three other gangs that are manufacturing various types of drugs by setting up mini labs in and around the capital Dhaka.
Mehdi Hasan, deputy director of the Dhaka divisional intelligence office of the directorate, told Prothom Alo that in the last four months, dangerous unconventional drug kush and ketamine labs have been found in Dhaka. A factory was also found to make a new type of yaba by mixing different types of chemicals with yaba. A liquor lab was also found outside, where adulterated liquor was being manufactured. All lumbar chakras are identified.
On February 19, DNC raided a house in Tongi, Gazipur and found a yaba manufacturing factory. Four and a half thousand yaba, raw materials and equipment for making yaba were recovered from there. Lab owner Tohiduzzaman alias Shimul was arrested from there.
DNC officials said Tohiduzzaman was working as a chemist in an Ayurvedic laboratory in Pubail, Gazipur. There he gained the experience of making tablets in the dyes. Using that experience, Yaba joined the production four months ago. Later he left his job and opened an Ayurvedic shop.
DNC officials learned that Tohiduzzaman first collected 500 yaba powder and mixed them with dyes and different chemicals to make about 5000 yaba.
A man named Tausif Hasan (22) has been accused of cultivating the unconventional drug ‘Kush’ after studying in California in the United States and setting up a lab at his home in Dhaka’s Wari. On January 7, his house was raided and this mini lab was found. Tausif used to run this lab from California, USA. One of his girlfriends was arrested on the charge of assisting him in this work.
DNC officials said a lab was set up in Tausif’s living room to grow kush (an advanced strain of marijuana). Kush seeds brought from California, cultivated kush plants, freshly picked kush, cultivation materials, lead consumption materials and foreign liquor were recovered from that lab. Later, in a temperature-controlled room made of tin and foil paper on the roof of the house, there are many tubs for cultivating plants.
On January 7 of this year, the Directorate of Narcotics Control (DNC) conducted an operation in Bhasundhara residential area and adjacent Jorsahara area of Vatara. A mini lab was found during the search of a flat in a residential building during the raid. Adulterated alcohol was being made in that lab. Complete infrastructure and equipment for making adulterated liquor was recovered from there. A large quantity of illegal and adulterated brewing chemicals were also seized. Three people have been identified in this incident. Two of them have been arrested.
Director General of Narcotics Control Directorate Hasan Maruf told Prothom Alo that criminals are becoming active in various ways with the help of advanced technology. They are involved in drug trafficking using global communication. Recently, some drug labs have been found in Dhaka. A foreign cycle has also been identified. Surveillance has been increased in such situations. The members of the DNC are trying their best to bring such a circle under the law.
