Former director of Pabna Mental Hospital in jail in corruption case

The court has sent former director of the mental hospital Dr. Tanmoy Prakash Biswas to jail in six cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Pabna. On Wednesday afternoon, he surrendered in the court of Senior Special Judge Pabna and applied for bail. After the hearing, the court denied bail and ordered to send him to jail.

Tanmoy Prakash Biswas is a resident of Kultia village of Manirampur upazila of Jessore. He is the former Director of Pabna Mental Hospital. Currently retired.

The other accused in the case are Humayun Kabir, the Pabna district officer of the Agriculture Marketing Department, currently the senior agricultural marketing officer of Dinajpur district, three brothers AHM Arefin, AHM Rezaun and AHM Faisal, contractors of Chatiani Mohalla, Pabna district headquarters.

According to ACC Pabna office sources, six separate cases were filed against five persons including ACC Tanmoy Prakash Biswas on charges of irregularities in procurement and various administrative activities and misappropriation of money while he was the director of Pabna Mental Hospital. The cases were filed on June 13 and 14, 2022. After a long investigation, the cases were filed as prima facie facts were established. Tanmoy has been made an accused in all the cases.

According to the statement of the case, the accused persons in collusion with each other premeditated abuse of power and through breach of trust and misconduct in 2017-2018 and 2018-19 fiscal year, the price of foodstuff purchased for the mental hospital was higher than the actual market price and embezzled Tk 88 lakh 7 thousand 768.

Manowar Hossain, the Deputy Assistant Director of Pabna District Office, who investigated the cases and ACC, filed separate charge sheets of six cases in the court on March 12, 2025 after the investigation.

According to the ACC Pabna office, Tanmoy Prakash appeared in the court to appear in the cases. When lawyers applied for bail on his behalf, ACC lawyers opposed the bail. After hearing both the sides, the court judge rejected the bail application considering the seriousness of the crime and ordered Tanmoy to be sent to the district jail.

Deputy Assistant Director of Pabna Office of ACC, Manowar Hossain, confirmed the matter and said, “The cases are now going on in the court. Court will give necessary instructions. We will take further steps accordingly.
