Young man dies after brutal torture following drug-fueled dispute in Dhaka

A 20-year-old man died on Wednesday after sustaining severe injuries during a brutal assault in the capital’s Rayerbazar area. The victim, Jihad Hossain, who worked at a mobile phone repair shop, succumbed to his injuries two days after he and a companion were abducted and tortured.
Police reported that the incident occurred late Monday night at a location known as Cancer Gali in Rayerbazar. Another young man, Nirob Hossain, 20, was also injured during the attack.
Hazaribagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mosharraf Hossain stated that the victims were lured to the scene by an acquaintance named Jahid. Under the pretext of hosting a party to celebrate a gambling win, Jahid contacted Nirob and instructed him to meet at Cancer Gali. On his way, Nirob picked up Jihad, and the two arrived at the meeting point around 1:00 a.m.
The group proceeded to the roof of a three-story building, where they consumed narcotics and food. According to investigators, an argument broke out, leading Jahid to assault both men. Jahid reportedly summoned two additional unidentified accomplices to assist in the violence. Following the overnight torture, the perpetrators contacted Nirob’s family and demanded a ransom of 10,000 taka. After the ransom was paid, the captors released Nirob the following morning and abandoned an unconscious Jihad near his residence in a rickshaw.
Shahid Mia, a cousin of the deceased, said the family began searching for Jihad when he failed to return home Monday night. Upon finding him in critical condition on Tuesday, the family transported him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Due to a lack of available beds in the intensive care unit, Jihad was transferred to Uttara General Hospital on Tuesday night, where he remained until his death on Wednesday.
Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim confirmed that the crime scene falls under his jurisdiction. While the investigation remains ongoing, authorities believe the attack was rooted in a dispute involving illegal narcotics. Police also noted that Nirob is currently facing a prior criminal case involving mugging.
