Woman Stages Protest at Expatriate Partners Home in Satkhira Demanding Marriage After Alleged Forced Abortion

A woman in Kalaroa, Satkhira, staged a sit-in protest at the residence of a Malaysia-based expatriate on Friday, accusing him of inducing an abortion after a two-year relationship marked by broken promises of marriage.
The complainant, a resident of a village in the Kalaroa Upazila, alleged that Monirul Islam, a native of Keragachhi village, deceived her after she became pregnant. According to the woman, she confirmed her pregnancy on May 24, 2025, at a clinic in Satkhira. She claims that Monirul convinced her to terminate the pregnancy to avoid social stigma, promising that they would marry. Following the procedure, the woman alleges that Monirul reneged on his commitment and subsequently relocated to Malaysia.
The woman, who is previously married and has a daughter, stated that her first marriage ended in divorce after her husband discovered her relationship with Monirul. She claims their involvement continued both while Monirul was working abroad and during his visits to the country.
During Friday’s protest, a video circulated on social media showing the woman outside Monirul’s home, where she reportedly threatened self-harm, causing alarm among local residents. The confrontation was eventually mediated by local community leaders and public representatives, who persuaded the woman to leave after assuring her that the matter would be addressed upon Monirul’s return to Bangladesh.
Monirul Islam could not be reached for comment regarding the allegations. However, his mother, Sufia Begum, denied the claims entirely, stating that her son has no relationship with the woman and that the accusations are baseless.
Mizanur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalaroa Police Station, confirmed that no formal complaint has been filed with the authorities. He stated that the police would initiate an investigation if a formal grievance is submitted.
