Woman Marries Saudi Expatriate After Twelve-Hour Hunger Strike at His Home in Gaibandha

A young woman in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj Upazila married a Saudi Arabia-based expatriate on Saturday following a 12-hour hunger strike staged in front of his residence.

The woman arrived at the man’s home at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Friday, demanding marriage and threatening suicide if her ultimatum was ignored. She was reportedly seen carrying a bottle of poison during the protest.

Local Union Parishad member Mahtab Mondal confirmed the incident, stating that the standoff concluded at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday after community leaders intervened to facilitate a resolution.

According to area residents, the two had been involved in a long-term romantic relationship. When the expatriate failed to marry her, the woman initiated the protest, sitting in front of the main gate of the family home throughout the night.

The gathering drew significant attention from the local community, creating a tense atmosphere. Village elders eventually stepped in to mediate, leading to the wedding ceremony after 12 hours of protest.

Officer-in-Charge of Gobindaganj Police Station, Mohammad Mozammel Haque, stated that no formal complaints had been filed with the authorities. However, he confirmed that he had been informed that the couple was married on Saturday.
