Two children drown while attempting to rescue sibling in Sunamganj pond accident

Two siblings drowned in a pond in Sunamganj’s Dharmapasha Upazila on Saturday afternoon after an attempted rescue effort turned fatal.
The victims were identified as nine-year-old Rabia Akter and her five-year-old brother, Sahad Mia. They were the children of local farmer Md. Sarowar from Chakiyachapur village in the Paikurati Union. Rabia was a fourth-grade student, while Sahad was enrolled in the nursery class at Chakiyachapur Government Primary School.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. while the children were playing near their home. According to family members and local residents, Sahad fell from a small wooden boat into the pond while attempting to navigate it. Rabia jumped into the water in a desperate bid to save her brother, but neither child possessed swimming skills.
Local villagers recovered both children in an unconscious state around 5:00 p.m. They were rushed to the Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex, where medical personnel declared them dead at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Alpana Akter, the children’s aunt, expressed the family’s profound grief, noting that the inability of both children to swim led to the tragedy.
Sub-Inspector Mojibur Rahman of Dharmapasha Police Station confirmed that authorities have been notified of the deaths. He stated that the family has raised no formal complaints regarding the incident, and police have concluded their preliminary assessment at the scene.
