Over 50 Injured in Violent Factional Clashes Over Village Dominance in Brahmanbaria

More than 50 people were injured in a violent clash between two rival groups in Tiara village, located in the Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria, on Saturday. The confrontation, which stemmed from long-standing disputes over local dominance, forced the deployment of police to restore order.
The clash began around 11:00 a.m. and lasted for two hours, with participants using mosque loudspeakers to mobilize supporters. Armed with machetes, knives, and traditional spears, the two factions engaged in widespread fighting that also resulted in the vandalism and looting of several homes and shops in the area.
According to local reports, the latest violence followed a dispute on Friday involving two youths associated with the faction led by former Union Parishad Chairman Abul Hossain. The youths, identified as Apon Mia and Bayezid Ahmed, were reportedly assaulted by supporters of rival leader Atiqur Rahman, also known as Shishu Mia, while returning from a football match. This incident triggered a series of confrontations at the local Tiara market, which escalated into Saturday’s large-scale conflict.
Following the outbreak, approximately 40 of the injured sought medical treatment at the Brahmanbaria General Hospital, while others were admitted to the Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex and local clinics.
The two factions have a history of violent encounters. A previous clash on June 1 and June 2 resulted in the death of a man named Iqbal Mia, who succumbed to his injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on June 11. Following that death, a murder case was filed against nine individuals, including Atiqur Rahman as the primary suspect, along with 25 to 30 unidentified persons.
Nabinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Morshed Alam Chowdhury confirmed the ongoing animosity between the groups led by Abul Hossain and Atiqur Rahman. He stated that the situation in Tiara village has been brought under control, and police officers remain stationed in the area to prevent further unrest. Efforts to reach both Abul Hossain and Atiqur Rahman for comment were unsuccessful as their mobile phones were unreachable.
