Top-listed criminal killed in targeted attack in Satkania

A 35-year-old man identified as Jahedul Islam, also known as Picchi Jahed, was hacked to death by a group of assailants in Satkania upazila of Chattogram on Sunday night. The attack occurred around 10:00 p.m. in front of a shop owned by Farid Saudagar in South Purangar village under Purangar Union.
Jahedul Islam, a resident of the Panchghariyapara area of Purangar Union, had been identified earlier this year as the top suspect on a list of 330 alleged criminals compiled by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
According to police and local residents, Jahedul was traveling home on a motorcycle with an associate named Wahid when the incident took place. A group of six to seven assailants blocked their path by placing tree trunks across the rural road. The suspects forcibly pulled Jahedul from the vehicle and attacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene. Local residents transported him to a private hospital in the upazila, where attending physicians declared him dead. Wahid also sustained injuries during the encounter but is currently considered to be out of danger, authorities said.
Jahedul had a lengthy history of criminal activity, including multiple cases related to illegal firearms, drug trafficking, extortion, and terrorism. At the beginning of the year, he was arrested by joint forces in the Purangar area in possession of Yaba tablets and indigenous weapons, though he was later released on bail. Following his arrest, authorities had issued a formal ban on his entry and residency within Chattogram city to maintain public security, placing him at the top of the city’s wanted list.
Mohammad Ariful Islam Siddiqui, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Satkania Circle, stated on Monday morning that police have collected evidence from the scene and transferred the body to a hospital morgue for an autopsy. Authorities have also recovered the victim’s motorcycle.
“Preliminary investigations suggest the killing was motivated by long-standing enmity,” Siddiqui said. “We have identified several suspects and are initiating the necessary legal actions to apprehend those involved.”
