Dhaka Metropolitan Police Arrest 498 Individuals During Citywide Operations

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 498 individuals during anti-crime operations conducted across the capital over a 24-hour period ending at midnight Thursday. Authorities have filed 47 cases against the suspects in connection with these arrests.
Niaz Mehedi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, confirmed the details of the operation, which ran from midnight Wednesday to midnight Thursday.
The arrests were distributed across various police divisions, with Mirpur recording the highest number of apprehensions at 131, followed by Wari with 91, Uttara with 59, Tejgaon with 51, Motijheel with 48, Gulshan with 45, Ramna with 36, and Lalbagh with 31. Additionally, the DMP’s Detective Branch and Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit reported four and two arrests, respectively.
During the sweep, police seized a significant cache of illicit items, including two locally-made pipe guns, two cartridges, 39 Chinese rifle rounds with four chargers, 10,287 Yaba pills, 1.15 kilograms of cannabis, and 70 bottles of cough syrup. Law enforcement also recovered various weapons, including a knife, a pair of scissors, and a blade fragment. Other items confiscated include 156 playing cards, five mobile phones, a truck, a motorcycle, a computer CPU, and a wristwatch along with 499,870 taka in cash.
This latest enforcement action follows a similar operation in the preceding 24-hour period, from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday, during which the DMP arrested 506 people and initiated 55 cases.
