Death toll rises to eight following toxic gas leak at Sitakunda shipbreaking yard

The death toll from a toxic gas leak at a shipbreaking yard in the Bhatiari area of Sitakunda, Chittagong, has risen to eight. The incident occurred Friday morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. at a facility identified as Ferdous Steel, located near the Station Road area of Bhatiari Union.
The fatal exposure reportedly originated from a gas cylinder used during the dismantling of a scrap vessel. Emergency response efforts were initiated following the accident, though authorities confirmed the mounting number of casualties throughout the day.
While the identities of all victims have yet to be fully disclosed, four of the deceased have been identified. They are 22-year-old Sunny Jaldas, 27-year-old Palash Jaldas, and two brothers, 40-year-old Mansur Ali and 38-year-old Nasir Uddin. All identified victims were residents of the Bhatiari area. Local authorities and relevant industrial safety agencies have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the leak and potential safety violations at the shipyard.
