Child dies following gas explosion in Narayanganj; parents remain in critical condition

An eight-year-old boy, Maruf, has died following a gas leak explosion that scorched his family in a rented tin-shed home in Narayanganj. The child succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
His parents, Maidul Islam, 28, and Beauty Akter, remain in critical condition and continue to receive intensive care. According to Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, the resident physician at the institute, the victims suffered severe burns: Maidul sustained 85 percent burns, Beauty 80 percent, and the young Maruf 90 percent.
The incident occurred early Friday morning in the Chapatali area of Kuripara, located in Ward 27 of the Bandar district. Maidul, a mason by trade, resided in the home with his wife and son.
Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service suggest that a gas leak caused the room to fill with combustible gas throughout the night. Because the windows were kept closed, the gas could not escape. Fire officials believe the explosion was triggered early Friday morning when Maidul attempted to light a cigarette, causing the accumulated gas to ignite.
Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing the explosion and rescued the family from the burning structure. The blast caused significant damage to the home, destroying the roof and parts of the walls. The interior was gutted, with the ceiling, bedding, and other belongings incinerated, and a ceiling fan found bent from the force of the blast.
