BGB and BSF Exchange Detainees Following Border Tensions in Meherpur and Kurigram

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) soldiers held a flag meeting on Tuesday to resolve a tense standoff following cross-border detentions in Meherpur and Kurigram.
In Meherpur, 70-year-old Bangladeshi farmer Abdul Mannan was detained by the BSF while he was spraying pesticides on his crops near the Ichakhali border point Tuesday morning. Mannan, a resident of Ichakhali Mosque Para and son of the late Nur Box, has historically cultivated crops on that plot.
Following news of the detention, local residents retaliated by detaining two Indian farmers, identified as Sachin Karmakar and Narayan Deb, and holding them in the village. Tensions remained high until BGB and BSF officials conducted a flag meeting at 2:00 p.m. to negotiate a mutual release.
Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, commander of the BGB Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), confirmed that the exchange was successful. Abdul Mannan was returned to Bangladeshi authorities, and the two Indian nationals were handed back to the BSF.
Separately, the BSF detained a 23-year-old Bangladeshi youth, Ajibor Rahman, in the Bhurungamari border area of Kurigram. Rahman, son of Nurul Mia of Kaziar Char, was taken into custody late Monday night after he and a group of others crossed into Indian territory near the Donalar Matha area of Shilkuri Union. While the rest of the group managed to flee back into Bangladesh, Rahman was captured by BSF patrols.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbub-ul-Haq, commander of the BGB Kurigram Battalion (22 BGB), stated that legal proceedings are currently underway to secure the return of the detained youth from Indian custody.
