Beloved Bogura Primary School Headteacher Dies After Mugging in Dhaka

BOGURA, Bangladesh — An atmosphere of profound grief descended upon the Bagbari Girls’ Government Primary School on Sunday as students, faculty, and local residents gathered to bid a final farewell to their head teacher, Ranjila Parvin. The educator died on Saturday morning after being fatally injured in a snatching incident in Dhaka.
Parvin was traveling in a rickshaw near the National Parliament building in the capital at approximately 6:00 a.m. when assailants attempted to seize her belongings. The violent tug from the attackers caused her to fall from the vehicle, resulting in injuries that proved fatal. She had arrived in Dhaka from Bogura the previous night, accompanied by her husband, for a scheduled appointment at the Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital.
Colleagues at the school, which Parvin had served for the majority of her career, expressed disbelief at her sudden passing. Only days earlier, on Thursday, she had bid her staff farewell with a request for prayers, promising to return to the classroom by Sunday morning. Assistant teacher Mehnaz Afrin credited Parvin for transforming the school, established in 1981, into a highly respected institution through years of dedicated service and mentorship.
The school, currently home to 86 students and a staff of six, remains in a state of mourning. Assistant teacher Rizenoba Aktar recounted a final, poignant moment with the head teacher, noting that they had shared a conversation at the Bagbari market just before Parvin’s departure for the capital.
The news of the tragedy has devastated Parvin’s family, including her husband and her daughter, Takiya Aktar, a ninth-grade student. Parvin’s brother, Zahid Islam, confirmed that funeral prayers would be held at the school premises on Sunday afternoon following an autopsy. She is set to be interred at her husband’s family graveyard in Tarafhartaj Uttarpara, located in the Gabtali Upazila.
Local educators, including Siddiq Md. Abu Bakar, remembered Parvin as an exceptionally kind and gentle individual whose loss has left a void in the community. The school remains closed today as students and staff struggle to come to terms with the loss of their longtime leader.
