Bangladeshi man killed in BSF firing along Chunarughat border in Habiganj

A 21-year-old Bangladeshi man was shot and killed by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Chimtibil border in the Chunarughat Upazila of Habiganj district on Sunday. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time.
The victim has been identified as Sohag Mia, a local resident and the son of Shafiqul Islam. Family members stated that Sohag was a cattle herder and claimed he was tending to his livestock near the border when he was targeted.
Lieutenant Colonel Tanjilur Rahman, commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 55th Battalion, confirmed that the shooting took place roughly one kilometer inside Indian territory near the Chimtibil border. According to the BGB, BSF personnel opened fire after identifying the individual as a suspected cattle smuggler.
Local residents reported hearing gunfire around midday and subsequently discovered a man lying on the ground. Following the identification of the victim by his family, he was transported to the Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead.
Sohag Mia’s uncle, Abdul Kadir, refuted allegations of smuggling, asserting that his nephew was only grazing cattle at the time of the incident.
The body was initially held at the Chunarughat hospital, where local police conducted a formal inquest at 3:30 p.m. The BGB confirmed that the body has been turned over to the police. It will be released to the victim’s family following the completion of necessary legal procedures.
