Armed Robbers Loot Over One Million Taka from Expatriate Engineers Home in Feni

FENI, Bangladesh — Authorities in Feni have launched an investigation into a brazen daylight robbery at the residence of a Saudi Arabia-based expatriate engineer, after surveillance footage of the incident went viral on social media.

The robbery occurred on Wednesday morning at the Rehan Mansion in the Muslim Bhuiyan neighborhood of Feni city. CCTV footage shows two men gaining entry to the second-floor apartment occupied by Shahana Akter after she opened the door in response to the doorbell. The assailants immediately pushed their way inside, subdued the victim, and held her captive for approximately 15 minutes.

According to Akter, she was home alone at the time of the incident. The perpetrators threatened her with a sharp weapon and forced her into a bathroom, falsely claiming that her son had been abducted and was being held hostage downstairs. The suspects fled the apartment at 8:55 a.m. with 1.06 million BDT in cash and several gold ornaments.

Neighbors rescued Akter after hearing her cries for help from the bathroom. Upon investigation, she discovered that the apartment had been ransacked. While the cash was stolen, police later recovered 10 bhoris of gold ornaments that had been left behind by the suspects during their escape.

Feni Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Oli Ahad confirmed that investigators inspected the scene shortly after the robbery. He noted that the recovered gold was returned to the victim’s family.

Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Muhammad Saiful Islam stated that the victim and her family members visited the district police office on Thursday to provide statements. Investigators suspect the robbery may have been an inside job, as the perpetrators appeared to have prior knowledge of the cash and valuables kept in the home.

“The victim has provided a list of suspects whom they believe may have leaked information about the valuables to the robbers,” said Additional SP Islam. “We are currently processing the formal case at the Sadar Police Station and expect to identify and apprehend the suspects shortly.”

Akter’s husband, a professional engineer, is expected to return to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia shortly. Family members stated that formal legal proceedings will be finalized upon his arrival.
