New Zealand captain Tom Latham has lauded emerging Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana, declaring him one of the world’s best bowlers and predicting a bright future for the 23-year-old. Rana’s potent pace and ability to extract bounce troubled New Zealand batters throughout the recently concluded series, where he claimed eight wickets and earned the player of the series award.
Latham made the comments following New Zealand’s 55-run defeat in the third One-Day International in Chattogram, which sealed a series loss for his side. “He is a quality bowler right now and will become a great bowler in the future,” Latham stated.
The New Zealand skipper expressed astonishment at Rana’s consistent speed, clocking over 140 kph even on the slow pitches of Mirpur. “I spoke to him before the game and he said he’s only 23,” Latham remarked. “When someone can come in and bowl at 145 or 150 kph on a slow wicket, it shows his skill and special qualities. He is bowling exceptionally well at the moment, and it’s certain he is a bright star for Bangladesh.”
The absence of New Zealand’s senior players, currently participating in the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League, along with another squad touring Sri Lanka, presented an important learning opportunity for the inexperienced touring party.
“When you come into these kinds of environments or unfamiliar conditions, it’s important to learn and grow from it,” Latham explained. “Many of the guys in this group haven’t been to Bangladesh or the subcontinent before, so it’s a great learning opportunity for them.”
Latham conceded that the experienced players in his squad had not adequately shouldered responsibility during the series. “When you have less experienced players in the team, it’s crucial for the experienced ones to step up and contribute significantly,” he said. “Unfortunately, myself and the others you mentioned weren’t able to perform match-winning roles for the team.”
