Norwegian Football Federation Calls for FIFA Peace Prize Abolition

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norway’s football federation (NFF) has called for FIFA to abolish its “Peace Prize,” arguing the award contravenes the global governing body’s commitment to political neutrality.

The federation’s stance follows criticism of FIFA President Gianni Infantino presenting the award to U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington in December. NFF President Terje Liverød stated that FIFA is not mandated to award such prizes, asserting that the Nobel Institute independently handles such recognitions.

Liverød further contended that the Peace Prize awarded at the World Cup draw ceremony in Washington violated FIFA’s own political neutrality policies. He also indicated that necessary internal legal procedures within FIFA were not followed in the awarding of the prize.

The NFF also announced its support for an complaint lodged with FIFA’s ethics committee by the campaign group FairSquared concerning the Peace Prize.

The NFF is expected to formally present its views on the matter at the FIFA Congress scheduled to commence in Vancouver on April 30.
