The FIFA World Cup 2026 is going to start in June this year, jointly organized by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament is less than two months away. At such a time, a case has been filed in the United States against the current world champion of Argentina, Lionel Messi.
Miami-based VID Music Group sued Messi and the Argentine Football Association in Miami-Dade Circuit Court last month, alleging fraud and breach of contract. According to court documents, the alleged breach of contract amounts to about $7 million for not participating in a friendly match.
The company claims it paid about $7 million to get the exclusive rights to host and broadcast Argentina’s two friendlies against Venezuela and Puerto Rico. The contract stipulated that Messi would have to play at least 30 minutes in every match unless he was injured.
But Messi did not play in the match against Venezuela on October 10; Instead, he sat in a suite at the stadium and watched the game. However, the next day he played for his club Inter Miami and scored two goals, which caused controversy.
He later played in a match against Puerto Rico on 14 October. However, the match was originally scheduled to be held in Chicago but was moved to Florida due to low ticket sales and other reasons, causing further financial losses for the organizers.
Vibe Music Group alleges that Messi’s absence in one match and low ticket sales in another match have caused them huge financial losses. However, the suit did not mention the specific amount of compensation.
There has been no official response from Messi or the Argentina Football Association.
