A woman was taken into police custody in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh following mounting local tension on Sunday night (October 15), triggered by her remarks on a Facebook live video expressing grievances over the theft of electrical wires from her business establishment.
The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when Sathi Akhter, proprietor of a beauty parlour named Sathi Makeover located in the Square Masterbari area, broadcasted two separate live videos lasting five minutes and twenty-two seconds and eight minutes and eight seconds respectively from her Facebook account. During the broadcasts, she voiced sharp frustration over the theft at her shop and remarked that she was suffering the consequences after voting for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party government.
The video rapidly circulated across social media platforms, provoking immediate outrage among local Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and activists, who subsequently gathered and surrounded her establishment to demand retribution. As volatility escalated in the area, law enforcement personnel intervened and took the woman into protective custody at approximately 8:30 PM on Sunday.
Ibrahim Khalil, a member of the convening committee for the Bhaluka Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal, stated that local party activists grew infuriated over derogatory remarks directed at the party and sought to confront her, prompting party leaders to rush to the scene and calm the situation.
in-charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station, noted that between 150 and 200 people had gathered at the scene, adding that the woman was brought to the police station on Monday morning to maintain public order as no formal complaints had been filed against her. Authorities are currently evaluating whether her angry outburst during a moment of distress constitutes a legal offense or party defamation, while also weighing potential public reactions and the risk of road blockades should she be released. Police officials confirmed that further decisions regarding her status will be finalized following consultations with senior law enforcement officials and local leaders.
