Tension erupted in Madaripur town on Thursday night (October 17) as law enforcement officers faced a sudden backlash from local residents during a routine drive, resulting in a heated altercation and brick-pelting. The incident unfolded at approximately 8:00 PM near the Shaheen Bakery intersection in the Pakdi area under Madaripur Municipality, when police detained seven individuals from a local club.
According to police accounts and eyewitness testimonies, officers conducted a raid at the Tajun Nessa Smriti Sangha club as part of regular operations, arresting the seven suspects over various allegations. As law enforcement personnel attempted to transport the detainees to the police station, locals intervened, triggering a verbal confrontation. The situation escalated into violence when crowds hurled brickbats at the police convoy. In response, officers baton-charged the gathering under the direct supervision of Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad.
While police officially maintained that no detainees escaped, at least seven eyewitnesses asserted that two of the handcuffed suspects—identified as Hanif Khan and Sifat Khalifa—managed to slip away amid the commotion and the gathering crowd. According to these accounts, the chaos prompted police to launch a secondary search operation in the Pakdi area shortly afterward, though officers failed to immediately recapture the fugitives. Within an hour, however, district Krishak Dal Member Secretary Ohiduzzaman Ohid brought the two missing men back and handed them over to the authorities.
Downplaying the incident as an escape, Krishak Dal leader Ohiduzzaman claimed that police inadvertently left the two individuals behind at the scene rather than them fleeing custody, stating they later returned the men without any further complication. Meanwhile, police formally recorded the arrest of all seven detainees across multiple cases. The suspects are Sifat Khalifa, 25, Hanif Khan, 40, Arif Khalifa, 29, Srabon Khan, 18, Yarsin Sardar, 18, Ramjan Matubber, 18, and Moin Munshi, 22, all residents of the Pakdi area.
Reiterating that no prisoner had fled custody, OC Abul Kalam Azad asserted that both Hanif Khan and Sifat Khalifa were brought directly to the police station in handcuffs, presenting photographs on his mobile phone as purported proof of their presence. The OC maintained that the targeted club served as a hub for narcotics trade, prompting the raid and subsequent crackdown against obstructing locals, while confirming that legal procedures against the arrested individuals are actively underway.
