Youth Party activist missing after falling into flooded Sangu River in Satkania

A 32-year-old local resident is missing after falling into the Sangu River in the Satkania upazila of Chattogram early Thursday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. near the BOC Mor Saudagar Para area in Kaliyaish Union, leaving rescue teams and family members searching for the man, identified as Abdul Alam, as of late afternoon.

Alam, a father of two and a member of the Jubo Dal, had reportedly ventured into the river with three companions on Wednesday morning to collect wood being carried by the strong currents. Local ward member Jasim Uddin confirmed the details of the incident, noting that the group had been navigating the river during the early hours.

According to the victim’s brother, Nurul Alam, the three friends who were with the missing man returned to the area around 8 a.m. to report that Alam had accidentally slipped from the boat and vanished into the water. Despite immediate efforts by his companions to locate him, he remained missing as of 3 p.m.

The disappearance comes as the Sangu River poses a significant threat to the region, with water levels currently flowing 22 centimeters above the danger mark. The flooding has inundated rural roads and residential areas, leaving hundreds of thousands of people stranded across the upazila.

Satkania Upazila Executive Officer Khondokar Mahmudul Hasan stated that authorities had not been officially notified of the incident until mid-day. Officials have since launched inquiries into the matter to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and coordinate potential search efforts.
