Young man wounded in shooting at Khulna sand field amid rise in local gang activity

A 22-year-old man was shot and wounded by unidentified assailants in the Ashibigha Balur Math area of Khulna on Thursday morning. The victim, Ratul Sheikh, a resident of the North Harintana area under the Labanchara Police Station, was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital by local bystanders after he was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his right thigh.
Local residents reported hearing gunfire before discovering the young man lying in the field. While the immediate motive behind the attack remains unclear, law enforcement officials are actively investigating potential links to organized crime.

Officer-in-Charge of Labanchara Police Station, Syed Mosharraf Hossain, stated that authorities are exploring several leads, including the possibility of internal feuds within criminal factions or disputes surrounding the formation of new local groups. Although police noted that Ratul does not currently have a criminal record, they are not ruling out his potential affiliation with an active group in the area.
This incident follows a similar shooting on June 29, when 35-year-old Rafiqul Islam was wounded by unknown attackers in the Gollamari area. These acts of violence underscore a troubling trend of rising criminal activity across the city.

According to police data, Khulna recorded 19 homicides between January and June of this year. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies have identified the involvement of various criminal syndicates in at least 34 murders reported in the aftermath of the recent mass uprising. Authorities attribute this surge in violence to ongoing turf wars over drug trafficking, illegal arms trade, extortion, and long-standing rivalries between competing criminal factions. Police are currently conducting an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the latest shooting.
