Who won the war in Iran? What the Israelis think

Several public opinion polls published on Thursday (April 9) have revealed such sensational information. At the same time, a large part of the country is strongly opposed to the current ceasefire.

Polls by Israel’s top media showed mixed opinions about the victory. A Channel 13 poll found that only 33 percent of Israelis believed they had won the war, while 28 percent said Iran had actually won. 

In Channel 12’s poll, this win rate was 30 percent and in Cannes 11’s poll, it further decreased to 25 percent. A common picture across all polls is that more than half of citizens do not support a U.S.-brokered cease-fire, but instead favor continuing the fight against Iran.

The country’s strategic location has seen mixed reactions among citizens. According to Channel 13, 37 percent of Israelis think the country’s strategic position has improved since the war, while an almost equal number, 34 percent, think the situation has worsened.

The results of this opinion poll are seen as a major political challenge for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Especially in an election year when he is repeatedly claiming total victory over Iran and vowing to change the face of the Middle East, this mistrust of his own people could put great strain on his leadership. 

The polls reveal a stark contrast between the image the government is trying to portray of military victory and strategic success, compared to the perceptions of ordinary Israelis.
