A sensational situation has arisen in Kurigram’s Phulbari over allegations of marriage and multiple affairs on mobile phones. Enraged by this incident, the local people formed a human chain in front of the accused groom’s house on Sunday.

The participants in the human banding held posters and festoons with the image of the groom and chanted ‘Bar tumi kaar?’ They demanded a fair investigation of the incident and ensuring the rights of the victims.

Locals said that Babu Mia, the second son of the deceased Abed Ali Darji of Baralai Zakariatari village of the upazila, has been living in Dubai for a long time. During his stay in exile, he married Jim Khatun, daughter of Joynal tailor of the same village, through mobile phone. Jim Khatun is a first year student of a local government college.

According to the complaint, the marriage was not officially registered in any Kazi office but was conducted through video call in the presence of the groom’s family. After marriage there was regular communication between husband and wife. They were also assured to start a family back home.

However, in the meantime, allegations of second marriage against the same person surfaced. Locals claim that Babu Mia married Shireena Khatun, daughter of Sirajul Haque of neighboring Naodabash village, while abroad, on the same mobile phone. He is also said to be a student.

Intense discussion and criticism has started in the area around this incident. The role of some individuals locally has also been questioned. However, no official statement has been received from any of the concerned parties.

Locals who participated in the human bond said that it is important to clarify the issue of cheating and multiple relationships in the name of mobile marriage. Administration intervention is required to reveal the true facts and ensure justice to the victims.

Meanwhile, the locals demanded a clear explanation from the concerned parties to clear the confusion about the whole matter.

In this regard, Mahbul Haque Khandkar, UP member of Barlai village of Baravita union, said that the incident is very sensitive and sad. Allegations of having multiple relationships through mobile phones in the name of marriage are true. This is socially and morally unacceptable. As the concerned families are affected, confusion and unrest have been created in the entire area.
