UNDP delegation meeting with Chief Whip

Chief Whip of the National Assembly. The delegation of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) had a courtesy meeting with Nurul Islam. This meeting was held at the Chief Whip’s office on Monday. During the meeting, various issues were discussed including strengthening parliament, e-governance, e-parliament, poverty alleviation, environmental development, freedom of speech, session of national parliament and rules of procedure of parliament.

This information was informed in a circular of the Parliament Secretariat.

It is said that during the meeting, Chief Whip Nurul Islam said that there are many environmental and economic problems in Bangladesh. The current government is providing various types of financial assistance including family card, farmer card to eradicate poverty. The government has taken programs like planting trees and digging canals to save the environment.

The Chief Whip also said that Parliament must be strengthened to institutionalize democracy. Many problems are solved when the opposition party and the government party reach a consensus in the parliament. The formation of a special committee on energy has solved the energy problem in the country.

UNDP’s Assistant Program Adviser on Governance Dragan Popvich said that UNDP can play a helpful role in bridging the gap between parliamentarians and people in Bangladesh. National Parliament and UNDP can work together to make Parliament more effective.

The UNDP delegation also included UNDP Assistant Resident Representative Anwarul Haque and Project Manager Mahmudul Hasan.

The concerned senior officials of the National Parliament Secretariat were present during the meeting.
