Two Teenagers Drown While Swimming During Eid Holiday

Two teenage boys drowned in the Jamuneshwari River in the Taraganj sub-district of Rangpur on Friday, turning a joyous Eid homecoming into a scene of profound grief. The victims, 15-year-old Ohid Islam and 16-year-old Masud Rana, had returned to their village of Dangirhat Telipara just days earlier to celebrate the holiday with their families.
The boys, both of whom worked as construction laborers in Dhaka to support their impoverished households, were among a group of friends who traveled to the Kashiabari area on Friday morning to bathe in the river. According to local witnesses, neither teenager knew how to swim. While attempting to wade in the water, both disappeared beneath the surface.
Local residents managed to recover Ohid’s body at the scene, while Masud was rushed to the Taraganj Upazila Health Complex in an unconscious state. Dr. Hasan Al Mamun, the physician on duty at the facility, later confirmed that Masud had succumbed to his injuries before arrival.
The tragedy has devastated the local community, casting a shadow over Eid celebrations in Telipara. Neighbors described the boys as polite, hardworking youths who spent their formative years laboring in the capital to supplement their families’ meager incomes. Ohid’s father works as a local van driver, while Masud’s parents had taken him to Dhaka to work alongside them in the construction sector.
Officer-in-Charge of Taraganj Police Station, Ruhul Amin, stated that police were dispatched to the site immediately following reports of the incident. The bodies of the two teenagers will be released to their families once the necessary legal procedures are completed.
