Two Passengers Survive After Launch Collision Capsizes Trawler in Buriganga River

Search and rescue operations in the Buriganga River were officially called off Sunday afternoon after two passengers reported missing following a vessel collision were found safe. The incident, which occurred near the Shyambazar ghat in the capital’s Sadarghat area, initially prompted concerns for the individuals’ safety after a passenger trawler was struck by a ferry.
According to Fire Service officials, the incident took place around 9:30 a.m. when the Sundarban-12, a launch arriving from Barishal, collided with a smaller trawler bound for Comilla. The impact caused the trawler, which was carrying 10 passengers, to sink. While eight individuals were recovered from the water shortly after the crash, two remained unaccounted for, triggering an urgent search operation.
The missing passengers were later located on the opposite bank of the river. Officials stated that after being thrown into the water, the two individuals swam to safety. Because they lacked mobile communication at the time, they were only able to confirm their survival by reaching out to their families, who subsequently notified the trawler’s owner. With no further reports of missing persons, emergency services concluded their rescue efforts.
Police investigating the collision reported that the trawler had been newly constructed in Gazipur and was in transit to Muradnagar, Comilla. Preliminary reports indicate the vessel stalled near Sadarghat after debris became entangled in its propeller, leaving the craft immobilized in the waterway shortly before the Sundarban-12 struck it.
