Two accused in Kushtia Pir murder case after arrest in jail

Police have arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the murder of Pir Abdur Rahman alias Shamim in Kushtia’s Daulatpur. After 19 days of the incident, the police arrested two people late on Sunday night and sent them to jail on Monday afternoon.

The arrested persons are Biplab (26) and Alif Islam (23), residents of South, West Phillipnagar village. Police say they have been identified through cellphone video footage captured during the Darbar attack.

According to the police, Pir Abdur Rahman alias Shamim, a resident of south-west Phillipnagar village of Daulatpur upazila, made derogatory comments about the Holy Quran – such a 36-second video from a few years ago went viral on social media from the morning of April 10. This creates anger among different classes of people. In view of this, on the morning of April 11, hundreds of people gathered in Abeder Ghat area, half a kilometer away from Shamim’s Durbar. Then after noon they attacked the court and Shamim was hacked and beaten to death in the presence of the police.

According to the statement of the case, Shamim’s elder brother Fazlur Rahman filed a murder case at Daulatpur police station as the plaintiff on April 13 at around 10:30 pm. The name and identity of four people have been mentioned in the statement. Local Jamaat leader Muhammad Khawaja Ahmed (38) has been charged as the chief and commander. He is the former president of Kushtia District Student Camp and currently a working council member of Daulatpur Upazila Jamaat. His house is in Islampur village of Phillipnagar union. The other three are Hossainabad (Bishwaspara) village of Daulatpur upazila. Asaduzzaman (35). He is the President of Daulatpur Upazila Committee of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis. Rajiv Mistry (45) of South-West Philipnagar Darogar Mor area has been made the accused number three. Accused number four is a resident of Islampur (East Para) village. Shihab. Apart from this, another 180 to 200 people have been named as accused.

The investigating officer of the case Daulatpur Police Station Inspector Sheikh Md. Ali Mortuza told Prothom Alo that since the case, members of law and order forces have been working in the field to catch the accused. The two arrested accused have been sent to jail through the court. The accused initially admitted that they were with others in the attack. If necessary, they will be remanded. Operation is on to nab the other accused.
