The Swiss Ambassador distributed awards at the 3rd National Human Rights Olympiad in Dhaka.

Human rights are recognized by the country’s constitution. If the 16 rights given in the constitution are violated in any way, the victim can seek redress through the court. Despite the expectations, the human rights situation did not improve after the July coup.

The speakers said these things at the prize distribution ceremony of the 3rd National Human Rights Olympiad, 2026, organized by the Human Rights Support Society and the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh. Speaking as the chief guest at the event, Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Alberto Giovenetti said that Human Rights Olympiad was more than a competition. It provides an opportunity to learn, think, question and understand why human rights are important in everyday life.

“Its purpose is simple but important—to make young people like you aware of human rights issues, commitments and responsibilities, and to raise awareness among the next generation,” said the Swiss ambassador.

Alberto Giovenetti said that Switzerland works with the government, development partners, civil society, human rights organizations and other important partners to promote human rights in Bangladesh. Switzerland has long strongly supported state institutions such as the National Human Rights Commission to be truly effective, independent and empowered.

Mohammad Moniruzzaman, general secretary of Human Rights Support Society, said that 16 rights are mentioned in the third part of the constitution of Bangladesh. If any of these rights are violated, they are judicially enforceable.

Moniruzzaman said that in the human rights report published by them for the last six months, about 6,245 cases of human rights violations were found. 56 people were killed in six months. On an average, there were about 30 collisions per day. These clashes did not happen among ordinary people; There was a political conflict.

Former member of National Human Rights Commission Prof. Shariful Islam said, “But we have not reached the desired goal of the July Revolution yet.” Bribery is going on everywhere, massive corruption is going on.

Earlier on Friday morning, the written test was held at Dhaka University’s Sirajul Islam Lecture Hall with the best 50 contestants of the final round of the Olympiad. Medals and certificates are given to all the contestants who appear in the written examination. Apart from this, the first 10 people were given a memento and prize money. The chief guest of the program, Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh, Alberto Giovenetti, handed over the prizes to the winners.
