The schoolgirl went to the police station and asked for help to prevent her child marriage
On the eve of SSC examination in Jianagar upazila of Pirojpur, a schoolgirl has taken refuge in the police station to prevent her child marriage. Today Saturday, this student of Indurkani Sadar Union of Upazila went to the police station twice to stop child marriage.
The police took the written bond from the guardian of the girl and handed her over to the family in the presence of local dignitaries. The victim schoolgirl is a 2026 SSC candidate of a school in the upazila.
According to local sources, the schoolgirl’s father is a farmer by profession and financially poor. As he got a ‘good’ proposal for his daughter’s marriage, he became interested in marrying her off. But the student is now unwilling to get married and wants to study. When the family pressured her to get married, she herself went to the police station and sought the help of the police to stop the marriage. Later, the police called her guardian to the police station and took the girl into their custody with a written bond not to commit child marriage.
The schoolgirl told Prothom Alo that the family is trying to force her into marriage. She does not want to get married now and wants to appear in the upcoming SSC exam. He also told about his desire to stand on his own feet by studying.
Regarding the complaint, the father of the schoolgirl said that the age of the girl has crossed 18 years. For this he decided to marry her. However, he also acknowledged his daughter’s desire to study.
A teacher of the student’s school told Prothom Alo that they are actively working to protect the student from child marriage and will not let her drop out in any way.
Saidur Rahman, deputy inspector of Jianagar police station, told Prothom Alo that the matter has been viewed seriously. The girl’s guardian was called to the police station and a written bond was taken on the condition of not giving child marriage and the girl was handed over to the family in the presence of local dignitaries.
